PRESS RELEASE: Namene launches new affordable, durable solar charger

Namene launches new affordable, durable solar charger to provide connectivity and power in any location.

[London/10.05.23] – Namene today launches the Zafi charger, an affordable lightweight solar panel aiming to give millions of people living off-grid or in peri-urban areas access to reliable, clean energy. Made from high-quality materials, Zafi is capable of charging a range of portable devices – from phone to fan – and is available as a one-off purchase with no subscription fees or contract.

Zafi is the latest product in Namene’s range of high-quality, affordable devices designed to meet families’ daily utility needs while eliminating sources of combustion and pollution. In line with Namene’s Buy As You Can approach, Zafi is sold as a single, low-cost product to allow households to save monthly income to buy other complementary devices as and when they need and can afford them.

Patrick Lagrange, Namene’s Managing Director said:

‘At Namene, we believe that everyone should have access to safe, sustainable and reliable products that enhance their daily life. This is why our purpose is to empower every community through clean technology. We created Zafi to offer a trusted source of power to people wherever they are, and to enable connectivity as well as physical and financial independence.’

Ian Mills, Head of Sales and Partnerships, added:

‘As with our other products, we designed Zafi with people and planet in mind. Using Zafi removes the need for time-consuming and costly trips to charging points and stations, and avoids the use of polluting batteries. The charger is priced to free up households’ income for other essential everyday products. It is built to last, giving people peace of mind that the product will last long after the initial purchase.’

In its initial launch phase, Zafi will be distributed in Namibia, Zambia and Kenya, before it is rolled out in more countries across Sub-Saharan Africa – which alone is home to over 500 million unique mobile subscribers – as well as globally.

The launch comes as more than 700,000 solar lights have now been sold in Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe as part of Namene’s 2 Million Lights Programme  – with existing light customers being offered Zafi as a complementary utility product.

Namene’s solar lights replace highly-polluting and toxic kerosene lamps, and their carbon-saving value is used to issue Gold Standard Verified Emissions Reductions to subsidise retail prices. So far, approximately 500,000 families have saved over $6 per month and gained independence from fossil fuels through the programme.

The 2 Million Lights Programme is on track to be delivered by the middle of next year, with new regions and countries in the coming months. Namene is also working on launching further clean technology products beyond solar light and chargers later in 2023.
