Zimbabwe climate project

Our project in Zimbabwe

We are working with distribution partners in Zimbabwe to bring clean, affordable solar light to families living off-grid and offset carbon emissions from fossil fuel lighting.

As part of our climate activities, Namene Solar is developing a project in Zimbabwe. Right now in Zimbabwe 59% of the population  – 8.5 million people – don’t have access to electricity. In rural households, this figure jumps to 80%, meaning 1.2 million households are without energy access. Only 3.8% of households use solar energy for lighting with people living beyond the grid, or in areas with unreliable electricity, using fossil fuels, battery-powered torches, candles and firewood.

Avoiding emissions.
Improving lives.

Solar lights for rural homes

Our project in Zimbabwe is designed to achieve the rapid adoption of solar lighting in rural homes to avoid carbon emissions and contribute to sustainable development goal 7: modern energy access for all.

We are providing high-quality solar lights subsidised by climate finance, and working with local distributors to reach last-mile communities through regional community centres, such as rural schools.

8.5 million people in Zimbabwe do not have access to electricity.

We are committed to transparency and accuracy in our climate projects. That’s why all of our projects are designed to meet the Gold Standard certification requirements. This certification ensures our project has the biggest possible impact and meets the highest standards of verification in the voluntary carbon market.

Affordable, reliable, renewable solar lights

We believe the life-changing power of solar lights should be accessible to all. Our solar lights enter rural markets at a highly subsidised price, breaking the affordability barrier for those who most need access to clean lighting. Our project in Zimbabwe is the first to distribute our second generation solar light, the SM200 to all our customers in Zimbabwe.
